Be a part of history and raise Delaware chickens. The Delaware is a dual purpose chicken that provides a good number of eggs and excellent meat for your family. Unlike today's commercial poultry, the Delaware's longer growth takes into account mature body organs that function fully to grow out nice flesh and provide years of laying eggs.
The Delaware is among the fastest growing of the heritage breeds, and their yellow skin makes for ideal meat production.
The hens are excellent brown egg layers.
The Delaware chicken has a family friendly personality. They are calm, curious, and entertaining. The roosters tend to be accepting of humans in their space, and attentive and protective of their hens.
Devoted, Collaborative Breeders
Heritage poultry breeders do not work in isolation. They seek the knowledge of past and present breeders. Sharing this knowledge is in their blood. Belonging to groups such as the Peninsula Poultry Breeders and American Pastured Poultry Producers Association is how we accomplish all that we do.
Working together performing hands-on assessments of individual birds is another way we share knowledge and gain experience as we strive for excellence in breeding heritage poultry.
Belle Mae Heritage Farm
The Delaware poultry breed is important in American history and deserves a prominent place on today's farms and in backyard flocks. On Belle Mae Heritage Farm we breed the Delaware to the standards of it's creation in 1940. Our goal is to improve our Delaware breeding flock every year. It takes many generations to see major improvements, but the small steps made each breeding season will one day turn into giant strides.
